Lunch was free. Google apparently has a large number of cafeterias in the various buildings serving up a large variety of different food each day, and it's all free, all the time. The desserts, the brand name drinks, the service of bottles of water at the tables...all of it. The people at lunch were fantastic and fun. Great minds, geeks carrying on threaded conversations and jokes. Amusing anecdotes: The person across from me was my official guide for lunch. He picked up the bottle of water: http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/2482668/2/istockphoto_2482668_original_flip_top_glass_bottle.jpg and was at a loss for how to open it. As we gently laughed at this 35 year old (and he took it well) the person to my right picked up the bottle of water, opened it, closed it, and showed him where to press on the metal to open it. My guide pushed not in the correct direction, not in the wrong direction, but SIDEWAYS. (As shown in the picture linked above, he pushed from left to right.) Much laughter. I was asked to pass out the plastic cups for water. I handed them out one at a time, first to the person diagonally away from me, then to the person to my right, then to the person across from me (my guide), then to myself. The person to my right had the bottle of water in his hand, and he placed his cup in the middle of the table and started pouring himself a cup of water as soon as I handed him his cup. My guide, when handed his cup, then put it far away from the middle. I then put my cup near the middle. The person pouring water then started filling my cup, and my guide immediately moved his cup from the far side to the middle, near mine. I said to my guide: "You put your cup on the other side so he wouldn't feel obligated to fill it, didn't you?" "Yes." "And then you moved it to the middle after I did so I wouldn't feel awkward about forcing him to pour me a glass?" "*laugh* Yep!" Geeks are so very conscious of their moves. :)
